Brigham Young University
Brigham Young University, founded in 1875, is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and its Honor Code, which all students must agree to follow, includes specific dress and grooming standards along with prohibitions on alcohol, tobacco, and premarital sexual relationships. The university's extremely low tuition, subsidized substantially by the LDS Church for both member and non-member students, makes BYU one of the most affordable private research universities in the country, a distinctive funding model tied directly to the church's ownership. BYU's law school and its Marriott School of Business have built strong national reputations, and the university's foreign language programs are exceptionally deep, benefiting from the large proportion of students who've completed two-year church missions abroad and return to campus already fluent in a second language. The university's combination of religious institutional ownership, its strict honor code, and its unusually large body of returning-missionary students with existing foreign language fluency has made BYU one of the most institutionally distinctive large private universities in the country.
VS
Utah State University
Utah State University, founded in 1888 as the state's land-grant institution, has built one of the strongest space and satellite engineering programs in the country through its Space Dynamics Laboratory, which has contributed instruments and technology to numerous NASA and Department of Defense space missions. The university's agricultural and veterinary science programs reflect its land-grant founding mission, and USU's engineering college has produced a significant number of graduates working in the aerospace and defense industries, drawing directly on the university's specific research strength in satellite technology. USU's Logan, Utah campus, set in a mountain valley in the northern part of the state, gives the university a distinctive setting relative to Utah's more urban Salt Lake City-area institutions, and the school's outdoor recreation programs benefit directly from the surrounding mountainous terrain. The university's specific strength in space and satellite engineering, disproportionate to its size and relatively modest national name recognition, has made Utah State a distinctive choice among students specifically interested in aerospace or satellite technology careers within Utah's public university system.
