Broadway
Nashville's Lower Broadway strip developed its dense concentration of honky-tonk bars substantially in the decades after the Grand Ole Opry established itself just around the corner at the Ryman Auditorium, with venues like Tootsie's Orchid Lounge becoming legendary gathering spots where songwriters and performers could be found between Opry sets. The strip's honky-tonks operate on an unusual business model built around no cover charge and tip-based house bands playing multiple sets a day, every day, a structure that's let working and aspiring musicians build careers performing live in front of tourists and industry scouts alike for decades. Several legendary Nashville figures got some of their earliest breaks playing Broadway's honky-tonks before major stardom, and the strip's continued function as a genuine, unglamorous proving ground for new talent — rather than a purely nostalgic tourist recreation — has kept it central to Nashville's ongoing music industry rather than just its history. For a Nashville attractions list, Broadway is the essential "the honky-tonk strip that's still a proving ground" entry — a dense run of no-cover bars beside the Ryman that's launched careers for decades, still running the exact same tip-based, multiple-sets-a-day model today.
VS
Grand Ole Opry
The Grand Ole Opry began in 1925 as a live radio broadcast called the "WSM Barn Dance," and it's been performed continuously in some form ever since, making it, by most accounts, the longest-running radio broadcast in American history — a run spanning nearly a full century without interruption. The Opry moved between several Nashville venues over the decades, most famously the Ryman Auditorium, before relocating in 1974 to its current purpose-built home, where a six-foot circle of wood cut from the Ryman's original stage was embedded center stage specifically so performers would still be standing on the same historic boards regardless of which building housed the broadcast. The show's format has stayed genuinely unusual in the modern music industry — a rotating variety-style lineup of multiple performers sharing a single evening's broadcast, still airing live to radio (and now streaming) audiences continuously, a structure that's barely changed since its earliest barn-dance-era broadcasts. For a Nashville attractions list, the Grand Ole Opry is the essential "the broadcast that never stopped" entry — a live radio variety show running continuously since 1925, still performed on a stage embedded with wood from its original Ryman Auditorium home.
