Buffalo Wild Wings
Buffalo Wild Wings was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1982 by two college students who reportedly couldn't find good Buffalo-style wings in the area and decided to open their own restaurant, and it grew into one of the largest sports-bar restaurant chains in the country built around wings, beer, and televised games. The chain's sports-bar format, with locations typically featuring dozens of televisions and a heavy emphasis on live sporting events, positioned it distinctly from more purely food-focused wing chains, making it a default destination for group viewing parties across the country. Buffalo Wild Wings' extensive numbered sauce menu, ranging from mild options up to extremely hot "Blazin'" wings that many locations require customers to sign a liability waiver to order, became a well-known piece of the chain's identity and a recurring subject of online eating-challenge videos. Buffalo Wild Wings's combination of its sports-bar-first format and its extensive, escalating sauce lineup has made it one of the most recognizable wing-centered restaurant chains in the country.

Anchor Bar
The Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York is widely credited as the birthplace of the Buffalo wing, with the most commonly told origin story crediting co-owner Teressa Bellissimo with first deep-frying and tossing chicken wings in a cayenne-butter sauce in 1964 as a late-night snack for her son and his friends. The bar's original wing preparation — deep-fried unbreaded wings tossed in a simple butter-and-hot-sauce mixture, served with celery sticks and blue cheese dressing — established the template that nearly every subsequent Buffalo wing served anywhere in the world has followed in some form. Buffalo's city government has formally recognized the Anchor Bar's role in wing history, and the bar has leaned into its origin-story status by preserving much of its original decor and continuing to serve its wings using close to the same original recipe and format for over half a century. The Anchor Bar's direct claim to inventing the Buffalo wing and its role in establishing the format followed by the entire modern chicken-wing industry has made it one of the most historically significant single food origin points in American cuisine.
