Brigham Young University-Hawaii
Brigham Young University-Hawaii, founded in 1955, is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and its student body is drawn substantially from across the Pacific Islands and Asia, reflecting the university's specific mission of serving Pacific Rim members of the LDS Church. The university's location adjacent to the Polynesian Cultural Center, a major Hawaiian tourist attraction that employs many BYU-Hawaii students, gives the school a distinctive direct institutional connection to Hawaiian and broader Polynesian cultural preservation and tourism. BYU-Hawaii's low, church-subsidized tuition and its significant international Pacific Islander student population give the university one of the most ethnically and nationally diverse campuses of any American college, despite its relatively small overall size. The university's combination of its church ownership, its specific mission serving Pacific Rim LDS communities, and its direct connection to the Polynesian Cultural Center has made BYU-Hawaii one of the most institutionally distinctive universities in the entire country.
VS
Hawaii Pacific University
Hawaii Pacific University, founded in 1965, has built a significant international student population, drawing students from across the Pacific Rim and beyond specifically for its business, nursing, and marine science programs combined with Honolulu's unique location. The university's downtown Honolulu campus and its separate oceanfront campus at Aloha Tower give students access to both an urban business district setting and a distinctive marine and oceanic studies environment within the same institution. HPU's marine biology program benefits directly from Hawaii's unique tropical Pacific ecosystem, and the university's business programs draw on Honolulu's significant tourism and international trade economy connecting the United States to Asia and the broader Pacific. The university's combination of its significant international student diversity and its dual urban and oceanfront campus settings has made Hawaii Pacific University a distinctive private university choice within the state's higher education landscape.
