Brigham Young University-Hawaii
Brigham Young University-Hawaii, founded in 1955, is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and its student body is drawn substantially from across the Pacific Islands and Asia, reflecting the university's specific mission of serving Pacific Rim members of the LDS Church. The university's location adjacent to the Polynesian Cultural Center, a major Hawaiian tourist attraction that employs many BYU-Hawaii students, gives the school a distinctive direct institutional connection to Hawaiian and broader Polynesian cultural preservation and tourism. BYU-Hawaii's low, church-subsidized tuition and its significant international Pacific Islander student population give the university one of the most ethnically and nationally diverse campuses of any American college, despite its relatively small overall size. The university's combination of its church ownership, its specific mission serving Pacific Rim LDS communities, and its direct connection to the Polynesian Cultural Center has made BYU-Hawaii one of the most institutionally distinctive universities in the entire country.
VS
University of Hawaii at Hilo
The University of Hawaii at Hilo, founded in 1947, is located on the Big Island of Hawaii, and its astronomy program benefits from direct proximity to the Mauna Kea observatories, giving Hilo students unusually accessible hands-on access to some of the world's most significant ground-based telescope facilities. The university's Hawaiian language program is one of the most significant Hawaiian language revitalization efforts in the state, and UH Hilo's College of Pharmacy is one of only two pharmacy schools in the state, reflecting the university's substantial investment in health professions education. UH Hilo's marine science and tropical agriculture programs benefit directly from the Big Island's distinctive volcanic geology and tropical ecosystem, giving students research access to a genuinely unique natural laboratory environment. The university's combination of its Mauna Kea astronomy access, its significant Hawaiian language program, and its pharmacy school has made UH Hilo a distinctive complement to the larger Manoa campus within Hawaii's public university system.
