Brigham Young University-Hawaii
Brigham Young University-Hawaii, founded in 1955, is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and its student body is drawn substantially from across the Pacific Islands and Asia, reflecting the university's specific mission of serving Pacific Rim members of the LDS Church. The university's location adjacent to the Polynesian Cultural Center, a major Hawaiian tourist attraction that employs many BYU-Hawaii students, gives the school a distinctive direct institutional connection to Hawaiian and broader Polynesian cultural preservation and tourism. The university's combination of its church ownership, its specific mission serving Pacific Rim LDS communities, and its direct connection to the Polynesian Cultural Center has made BYU-Hawaii one of the most institutionally distinctive universities in the entire country.
