Cable Cars
San Francisco's cable car system began operating in 1873, invented by engineer Andrew Smith Hallidie after reportedly witnessing a horse-drawn streetcar accident on one of the city's steep hills — Hallidie's design let cars grip a continuously moving underground cable rather than relying on horses to haul passengers up San Francisco's notoriously steep grades. The system once included more than 20 lines covering much of the city, but declining ridership and the rise of buses and streetcars led to a dramatic reduction through the 20th century; a strong public campaign in the 1940s and '50s successfully fought off a full shutdown, preserving the three lines that still operate today. In 1964, the cable car system became the first moving object ever listed as a National Historic Landmark, formal recognition of both its engineering ingenuity and its status as one of the last manually operated cable-powered transit systems still functioning anywhere in the world. For a San Francisco attractions list, the cable cars are the essential "ride the National Historic Landmark" entry — an 1873 hillside transit solution that's survived a century and a half of competition from buses and cars to remain the only mobile landmark on the National Register.
VS
Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island served as a US military fortification and prison beginning in the 19th century before becoming a federal penitentiary in 1934, built specifically to hold some of the era's most notorious and escape-prone inmates, including Al Capone, in a facility whose main selling point was the frigid, current-swept water surrounding it — a natural barrier considered escape-proof. That reputation was tested most famously in 1962, when three inmates carried out an elaborate escape using tools fashioned from spoons and a raft made of raincoats, disappearing into San Francisco Bay and never being definitively confirmed dead or recaptured — an unresolved case the FBI kept formally open for decades and that's inspired multiple films and ongoing amateur investigation. The federal penitentiary closed in 1963, and the island later became the site of a 19-month occupation beginning in 1969 by a group of Native American activists asserting rights to the land under federal treaty law, a protest that helped catalyze broader Native American rights activism nationally even after the occupation itself ended. For a San Francisco attractions list, Alcatraz is the essential "the rock nobody escaped from" entry — a federal penitentiary turned National Park Service site, reachable only by ferry, that's stayed the West Coast's most famous case study in confinement, escape, and protest all at once.
