Cable Cars
San Francisco's cable car system began operating in 1873, invented by engineer Andrew Smith Hallidie after reportedly witnessing a horse-drawn streetcar accident on one of the city's steep hills — Hallidie's design let cars grip a continuously moving underground cable rather than relying on horses to haul passengers up San Francisco's notoriously steep grades. The system once included more than 20 lines covering much of the city, but declining ridership and the rise of buses and streetcars led to a dramatic reduction through the 20th century; a strong public campaign in the 1940s and '50s successfully fought off a full shutdown, preserving the three lines that still operate today. In 1964, the cable car system became the first moving object ever listed as a National Historic Landmark, formal recognition of both its engineering ingenuity and its status as one of the last manually operated cable-powered transit systems still functioning anywhere in the world. For a San Francisco attractions list, the cable cars are the essential "ride the National Historic Landmark" entry — an 1873 hillside transit solution that's survived a century and a half of competition from buses and cars to remain the only mobile landmark on the National Register.
VS
California Academy of Sciences
The California Academy of Sciences, founded in 1853, is the oldest scientific institution in the western United States, and its current home in Golden Gate Park — a striking building designed by Renzo Piano and reopened in 2008 after a major rebuild — combines a natural history museum, a planetarium, and an aquarium under one roof, a genuinely unusual three-in-one format among American science museums. The building's living roof, planted with native California species across 2.5 acres of rolling, undulating hills, was engineered specifically to insulate the building naturally and manage stormwater runoff, and it's become one of the most widely cited examples of large-scale green-roof architecture in American museum design. Inside, the Steinhart Aquarium houses a living coral reef and an indoor rainforest dome spanning four stories, letting visitors move from a simulated Amazon rainforest through an aquarium and up to a planetarium show without ever leaving a single building — a structural choice meant to reflect the interconnectedness of the natural systems the museum studies. For a San Francisco attractions list, the California Academy of Sciences is the essential "three museums, one roof" entry — an 1853 scientific institution now housed under Renzo Piano's living roof in Golden Gate Park, combining an aquarium, planetarium, and natural history museum in a single building.
