Cadbury Creme Egg
The Cadbury Creme Egg was introduced in the United Kingdom in 1963, featuring a chocolate shell filled with a white-and-yellow fondant center designed to resemble an egg yolk and white, and it became one of the most recognizable seasonal candies associated with Easter worldwide. Cadbury has long limited the Creme Egg's availability to roughly the January-through-Easter window each year, a deliberate scarcity strategy that helped build sustained annual anticipation and made the candy's brief seasonal window part of its core appeal to devoted fans. The candy's distinctive gooey fondant center, made using a proprietary manufacturing process, became the subject of a widely publicized 2015 recipe controversy when Cadbury's American licensee Hershey altered the shell recipe, prompting significant public backlash from fans convinced the candy had noticeably changed. The Cadbury Creme Egg's combination of its deliberately limited seasonal availability and its instantly recognizable fondant-filled format has made it one of the most iconic Easter candies in the world.
VS
Peeps
Peeps, the marshmallow chick and bunny candy, were first produced by hand by the Rodda Candy Company in the 1920s before the Just Born candy company acquired the brand in 1953 and mechanized production, reducing what once took 27 hours per batch to just six minutes. The candy's bright, uniform coloring and simple marshmallow-and-sugar-crystal format made it an inexpensive, mass-producible Easter basket staple, and its shelf-stable nature contributed to its reputation, often made in jest, for having an unusually long, almost indestructible shelf life. Peeps became a genuine internet and pop culture phenomenon well beyond ordinary candy consumption, spawning "Peeps dioramas" contests at newspapers and museums, viral microwave-experiment videos, and a devoted fan subculture engaging with the candy as a creative medium rather than purely a snack. Peeps's combination of its mechanized mass-production origin story and its surprising second life as an internet and pop-culture phenomenon has made it one of the most culturally distinctive candies associated with Easter.
