Calvin Klein
Calvin Klein founded his fashion company in New York in 1968, building his early reputation around minimalist, understated American sportswear before achieving major mainstream fame in the late 1970s through a series of provocative designer jeans advertisements starring a teenage Brooke Shields. Klein's advertising, frequently pushing the boundaries of sexual suggestiveness in mainstream fashion marketing, generated significant public controversy at multiple points across his career while also proving highly effective at building brand awareness and driving sales for the company's jeans and underwear lines. The Calvin Klein brand's minimalist aesthetic, favoring clean lines and neutral colors over elaborate ornamentation, became closely associated with a specific vision of sleek, modern American style that distinguished it from more maximalist European fashion house sensibilities. Calvin Klein's combination of his boundary-pushing, sometimes controversial advertising strategy and his minimalist American design aesthetic has made him one of the most commercially and culturally influential fashion designers of the late 20th century.
VS
Vera Wang
Vera Wang worked as a figure skater and later a Vogue editor for over fifteen years before transitioning into fashion design at age 40, launching her own bridal design house in 1990 after reportedly struggling to find a wedding dress she liked for her own wedding. Wang's bridal designs became closely associated with celebrity weddings, and her reputation for elegant, modern wedding gown design fundamentally reshaped the American bridal fashion industry, moving it away from more traditional, conservative styles toward more architecturally sophisticated designs. Wang's later expansion beyond bridal wear into ready-to-wear fashion, fragrance, and home goods demonstrated a successful brand extension from a highly specialized niche (bridal fashion) into a broader lifestyle brand, a transition that proved more difficult for many other designers who began in specialized fashion categories. Vera Wang's combination of her unusual late-career transition into fashion design and her transformative influence on modern American bridal fashion has made her one of the most significant fashion designers of her generation.
