Camille Herron
Camille Herron set the women's world records for both the 100-mile and 24-hour running distances, becoming one of the most statistically dominant ultra-distance runners of the modern era across both fixed-distance and fixed-time race formats. Her background as a competitive marathoner before transitioning to ultra-distance racing gave her a faster raw running speed than many ultrarunning specialists, a combination of speed and endurance that helped her set records across multiple different ultra-distance formats rather than specializing narrowly in one. Herron's continued competitiveness while managing a chronic injury history that required extensive rehabilitation work earlier in her career reflected a level of resilience that became as central to her public reputation as her record-setting race results themselves. Her combination of her world records across multiple ultra-distance formats and her rare marathon-speed-to-ultra-endurance crossover has made Herron one of the most statistically dominant ultrarunners competing in the sport today.
VS
Courtney Dauwalter
Courtney Dauwalter has won the sport's three most prestigious 100-mile races — Western States, the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, and the Hardrock 100 — all in the same calendar year on multiple occasions, an achievement widely regarded as one of the most dominant single-season stretches in ultrarunning history. Her victory at the 2017 Moab 240, in which she finished first overall by more than ten hours ahead of the second-place male finisher, became one of the sport's most widely discussed results and helped establish her broader reputation for a competitive toughness that transcended typical gender-based race performance gaps. Dauwalter's sustained dominance across wildly varying terrain and distances, from technical mountain courses to flatter, faster desert races, reflected an unusually complete skill set relative to ultrarunners who typically specialize in one specific type of course. Her combination of her unprecedented same-season sweep of the sport's three biggest 100-mile races and her genre-defining overall victories against male competitors has made Dauwalter widely regarded as the greatest ultrarunner competing today.
