Cancún, Mexico
Cancún was deliberately created as a resort destination beginning in 1970, when the Mexican government's tourism development agency selected the then-uninhabited barrier island specifically for its white-sand beaches and turquoise water, building an entirely planned resort zone from scratch rather than developing around an existing town. That deliberate planning produced the Hotel Zone, a roughly 14-mile strip of beachfront resorts lining a narrow barrier island between the Caribbean Sea and the Nichupté Lagoon, purpose-built to maximize direct beach access for the large-scale all-inclusive resorts that now dominate the area's tourism economy. The city's proximity to major Maya archaeological sites, including Chichen Itza and Tulum, along with the extensive Mesoamerican Barrier Reef just offshore, gives visitors easy day-trip access to both significant ancient history and some of the best snorkeling and diving in the entire Caribbean without leaving the immediate region. Cancún's combination of a deliberately engineered resort zone, easy access to major Maya ruins, and world-class reef diving has made it one of the most consistently popular international vacation destinations for American travelers, particularly for all-inclusive resort trips and spring break travel.
VS
Maui, Hawaii
Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, and its combination of the Road to Hana — a roughly 64-mile winding coastal drive past waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and rainforest lookouts — with the volcanic summit of Haleakalā National Park gives visitors two dramatically different landscapes within the same island. The island's West Maui and South Maui coastlines are lined with resort towns like Lahaina and Wailea, built around calm, reef-protected beaches well suited to snorkeling, while Haleakalā's roughly 10,000-foot summit draws visitors well before dawn specifically to watch sunrise above the cloud line, a bucket-list experience Mark Twain once described as the most sublime spectacle he'd ever witnessed. Lahaina, the island's historic former whaling port and onetime capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, suffered a devastating wildfire in August 2023 that destroyed much of the town's historic core, and the island's tourism economy and residents have spent the years since navigating a genuinely difficult rebuilding process. Maui's combination of dramatic volcanic terrain, calm resort beaches, and a historic port town now rebuilding after tragedy has kept it one of the most consistently recommended Hawaiian Islands for travelers seeking both relaxation and genuine natural spectacle in a single trip.
