Candy Corn
Candy corn, first developed in the 1880s by candy maker George Renninger of the Wunderle Candy Company, became one of the most instantly recognizable and polarizing candies specifically associated with Halloween and autumn more broadly, despite bearing no actual corn ingredients. Its distinctive tri-color, kernel-shaped design, hand-poured in layers during its original production process, reflected a labor-intensive manufacturing technique that was genuinely novel for its era, part of a broader late-19th-century trend of candies shaped to resemble agricultural products for a largely rural American consumer base. The candy's reputation as one of America's most divisive treats, regularly topping both "most loved" and "most hated" Halloween candy surveys simultaneously, has become as much a part of its cultural identity as its actual flavor, generating recurring seasonal debate across social media each October. Its combination of its genuinely historic 1880s origin and its unmatched cultural status as Halloween's most argued-about candy has made candy corn one of the most singularly identifiable treats associated with the holiday.
VS
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, invented by former Hershey dairy farmer H.B. Reese in 1928, combine milk chocolate and peanut butter into a format that has consistently ranked as America's most popular Halloween candy in nationwide surveys for years running. Reese founded his own candy company before it was eventually acquired by Hershey in 1963, a merger that combined Reese's peanut butter cup recipe with Hershey's vastly larger chocolate production and distribution infrastructure, allowing the product to scale into the mass-market phenomenon it became. The candy's individually wrapped, single-serving cup format made it particularly well suited to trick-or-treating specifically, offering a complete, easily distributed portion that distinguished it from candies requiring division or unwrapping of larger bars. Its combination of its consistently top-ranked consumer popularity and its practically ideal individually wrapped format has made Reese's Peanut Butter Cups widely regarded as the single most popular Halloween candy in America.
