Case Western Reserve University
Case Western Reserve University was formed in 1967 through the federation of the Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University, two adjacent Cleveland institutions with distinct engineering and liberal arts traditions respectively, whose merger created one of the Midwest's top private research universities. The university's medical school and its close affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic, one of the top-ranked hospital systems in the country, give Case Western students and researchers direct access to one of the most significant clinical research environments in American medicine, a partnership relatively few medical schools can offer at that scale. Case Western's engineering and applied sciences programs have built particularly strong reputations in biomedical engineering, a field that benefits directly from the university's medical and hospital partnerships, and the school's research funding per capita ranks among the highest of any private university in the Midwest. The university's relatively modest national name recognition outside the Midwest, compared to its genuinely strong research output and medical school reputation, has made it a consistent favorite among students and researchers who know the field well but a somewhat under-the-radar choice nationally relative to peer research universities of similar caliber.
VS
Ohio State University
Ohio State University, founded in 1870 as a land-grant institution, has grown into one of the largest single-campus universities in the country, enrolling more than 60,000 students at its Columbus campus and maintaining one of the most comprehensive academic offerings of any American public university, with more than 200 undergraduate majors. The university's Wexner Medical Center and its James Cancer Hospital are among the top-ranked cancer research and treatment centers in the country, and Ohio State's engineering, business, and agriculture programs have each built strong national reputations that reflect the university's scale and research funding. Ohio State's Buckeyes football program is one of the most valuable and successful in college sports, with multiple national championships and a passionate statewide fan base that gives the university an outsized cultural presence across Ohio well beyond its academic reputation alone. The university's sheer scale — a research budget exceeding $1.5 billion annually and one of the largest alumni networks of any American university — gives Ohio State a level of institutional resources and reach that few public universities of any size can match, cementing its position as the state's flagship despite its size sometimes drawing comparisons to a small city rather than a college campus.
