Casio
Casio was founded in 1946 in Japan by Tadao Kashio, initially as an electronics company before entering the watch market and launching the Casio F-91W and related G-Shock lines that became defining examples of affordable, highly durable digital watch technology. The G-Shock line, introduced in 1983, was developed by Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe specifically after he accidentally dropped and shattered a mechanical watch, leading him to spend years developing a shock-resistant design that could survive drops, water exposure, and extreme temperature changes. Casio's digital watches became globally ubiquitous specifically due to their combination of extreme affordability and functional reliability, and models like the F-91W achieved a level of worldwide market penetration that made them one of the best-selling individual watch models in history by unit volume. Casio's combination of the G-Shock line's engineering-driven durability breakthrough and its watches' unmatched global affordability and sales volume has made it one of the most commercially significant watch brands in the world by units sold.
VS
Rolex
Rolex was founded in 1905 in London by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis, later relocating to Geneva, Switzerland, and the company introduced the first waterproof wristwatch, the Oyster, in 1926, a genuine engineering breakthrough at a time when most wristwatches were highly vulnerable to moisture and dust damage. Rolex further demonstrated the Oyster's durability in 1927 when swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wore one during her English Channel crossing attempt, and the watch survived the swim in full working condition, an early and effective piece of product demonstration marketing. The company remained privately held through a unique nonprofit foundation structure, the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, established in Wilsdorf's will specifically to ensure the company's profits would fund charitable causes rather than being distributed to private shareholders or a publicly traded ownership structure. Rolex's combination of its pioneering waterproof Oyster case technology and its unusual nonprofit foundation ownership structure has made it one of the most commercially dominant and structurally distinctive watch brands in the world.
