Casper
Casper was founded in 2014 by a group of five co-founders, built around a direct-to-consumer, mattress-in-a-box business model that let customers order a single, deliberately simplified mattress design online and have it compressed and shipped directly to their door rather than requiring an in-store showroom visit. The company became one of the most prominent examples of the broader 2010s direct-to-consumer startup wave, using heavy digital marketing, including widely discussed subway and podcast advertising campaigns, to build brand awareness without relying on traditional mattress retail showrooms. Casper's mattress-in-a-box model, compressing and vacuum-sealing a full-size mattress into a surprisingly compact shipping box that expands after unboxing, became a format that numerous subsequent mattress startups directly copied, reshaping how a significant share of the industry sold mattresses online. Casper's combination of its pioneering direct-to-consumer mattress-in-a-box model and its prominent role in the broader 2010s startup wave has made it one of the most disruptive mattress brands in the modern industry.
VS
Purple
Purple was founded by brothers Tony and Terry Pearce, who had previously developed cushioning technology for wheelchairs, and the company launched its mattress business built around a distinctive proprietary gel-like "Hyper-Elastic Polymer" grid material rather than traditional foam or coils. The company's viral 2016 crowdfunding-style product demonstration video, showing raw eggs being dropped onto the Purple mattress's grid material without breaking to illustrate pressure distribution, became one of the most widely shared direct-to-consumer product marketing videos of its era. Purple's distinctive purple-colored grid material became instantly recognizable in product photography and unboxing videos, giving the brand a strong visual identity that distinguished it clearly from competitors' more visually similar white memory foam and coil mattresses. Purple's combination of its origins in wheelchair cushioning technology and its viral egg-drop marketing demonstration has made it one of the most distinctively branded mattress companies in the direct-to-consumer mattress industry.
