Castle Rock, CO
Castle Rock takes its name from the distinctive castellated rock formation that rises directly above the town's historic downtown, a butte formed by ancient volcanic and sedimentary layers that's become the town's defining visual landmark and namesake since its earliest settlement in the 1870s. The town has been among the fastest-growing municipalities in Colorado over the past two decades, expanding from a population of around 25,000 in 2000 to well over 80,000 by the mid-2020s, driven substantially by new-construction residential development taking advantage of Castle Rock's position roughly midway between Denver and Colorado Springs along Interstate 25. The Outlets at Castle Rock, a large outlet shopping center built directly along I-25, draws shoppers from across the broader Front Range corridor and has become one of the more significant retail destinations between Denver and Colorado Springs, giving the rapidly growing town a substantial commercial tax base beyond its residential development. Castle Rock's combination of a genuinely distinctive geological landmark at its center, one of the fastest sustained growth rates of any Colorado municipality in recent decades, and a significant regional retail draw in its outlet mall has made it one of the more rapidly transforming suburbs anywhere along Colorado's Front Range corridor.
VS
Highlands Ranch, CO
Highlands Ranch is one of the largest master-planned communities in the United States, developed beginning in the late 1980s on a former cattle ranch south of Denver and built out in phases over subsequent decades to reach a population of well over 100,000 residents, despite remaining, unusually for a community of that size, an unincorporated area rather than its own independent city. The community was built around a network of distinct residential villages, each with its own recreation center, parks, and schools, a planning approach specifically designed to give a large-scale development a sense of smaller, more identifiable neighborhoods rather than one undifferentiated suburban sprawl. The Highlands Ranch Mansion, a Tudor Revival house built in the early 20th century as the centerpiece of the original cattle ranch, has been preserved as a historic site and event venue, giving the otherwise entirely modern, master-planned community a direct physical link back to the working ranch land it was built on top of. Highlands Ranch's combination of being one of the largest master-planned communities in the country, a village-based planning structure designed to create smaller neighborhood identities within a large development, and a preserved historic ranch mansion at its center has made it one of the more distinctive large-scale suburban developments anywhere in the Denver metro area.
