Cedar Fair
Cedar Fair traces its roots to Cedar Point, a Sandusky, Ohio amusement park with operating history dating back to 1870, making it one of the oldest continuously operating amusement parks in the United States, and the company grew from that single historic park into a chain of regional parks across North America. Cedar Point itself became particularly renowned within the amusement park industry for its roller coaster collection, earning the nickname "America's Roller Coast" for hosting one of the largest concentrations of record-setting roller coasters at any single amusement park in the world. Cedar Fair merged with rival Six Flags in 2024 to form a combined company under the Six Flags name, consolidating two of the largest regional amusement park operators in North America into a single company operating dozens of parks across the continent. Cedar Fair's combination of Cedar Point's status as one of America's oldest continuously operating amusement parks and its 2024 landmark merger with Six Flags has made it one of the most historically significant amusement park companies in American history.
VS
Merlin Entertainments
Merlin Entertainments was founded in 1999 in the United Kingdom, and the company grew into the second-largest operator of visitor attractions in the world by revenue, built substantially through an aggressive strategy of acquiring existing attraction brands rather than developing entirely new parks from scratch. The company's portfolio includes Legoland theme parks, operated under license from the Danish toy company Lego, along with Madame Tussauds wax museums and various Sea Life aquariums, giving Merlin an unusually diverse mix of attraction types compared to competitors focused primarily on traditional amusement park rides. Merlin has been majority-owned at various points by private equity firms and the Lego brand's own holding company, KIRKBI, reflecting a corporate ownership structure distinct from the more directly entertainment-industry-integrated ownership of competitors like Disney and Universal. Merlin Entertainments's combination of its acquisition-driven growth strategy and its unusually diverse portfolio spanning Legoland, Madame Tussauds, and Sea Life has made it one of the most structurally distinctive major attraction operators in the global theme park industry.
