Cedar Fair
Cedar Fair traces its roots to Cedar Point, a Sandusky, Ohio amusement park with operating history dating back to 1870, making it one of the oldest continuously operating amusement parks in the United States, and the company grew from that single historic park into a chain of regional parks across North America. Cedar Point itself became particularly renowned within the amusement park industry for its roller coaster collection, earning the nickname "America's Roller Coast" for hosting one of the largest concentrations of record-setting roller coasters at any single amusement park in the world. Cedar Fair merged with rival Six Flags in 2024 to form a combined company under the Six Flags name, consolidating two of the largest regional amusement park operators in North America into a single company operating dozens of parks across the continent. Cedar Fair's combination of Cedar Point's status as one of America's oldest continuously operating amusement parks and its 2024 landmark merger with Six Flags has made it one of the most historically significant amusement park companies in American history.
VS
Universal Parks & Resorts
Universal Parks & Resorts grew out of Universal Studios Hollywood, which began offering studio tours to the public in 1964, before the company developed dedicated theme parks built around its film and television properties, including Universal Studios Florida, which opened in 1990. Universal became particularly significant for its aggressive pursuit of major entertainment licensing partnerships, most notably its Wizarding World of Harry Potter lands, which opened starting in 2010 and became widely credited within the theme park industry with setting a new competitive standard for immersive, detail-intensive themed land design. The company's parent, Comcast's NBCUniversal, has continued major expansion investment, including the development of Universal Epic Universe, a significant new Orlando theme park that opened in 2025, reflecting sustained large-scale capital investment in directly competing with Disney's Florida resort dominance. Universal Parks & Resorts's combination of its film-studio-tour origins and its industry-redefining Wizarding World of Harry Potter lands has made it one of the most significant challengers to Disney's dominance in the modern theme park industry.
