Central Park
Central Park opened in stages beginning in 1858, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvin Vaux, who won a public design competition with a plan called the "Greensward Plan" that deliberately built in winding paths, sunken transverse roads, and naturalistic landscaping to make an 843-acre rectangle in the middle of Manhattan feel like an escape from the surrounding grid of streets rather than an extension of it. Building the park required moving an enormous amount of earth and rock and displacing several existing communities, including Seneca Village, a settlement of primarily Black property owners that was cleared through eminent domain during construction — a history the park's own visitor centers have increasingly worked to document and acknowledge in recent decades. The park's sunken transverse roads, a genuinely innovative design solution for their time, let cross-town traffic pass through the park's width without pedestrians in the park itself ever seeing or hearing the cars, a piece of engineering still cited by urban planners as ahead of its era. Today the park draws an estimated 42 million visits a year, making it one of the most visited urban parks in the world. For a New York City attractions list, Central Park is the essential "the city's green lungs" entry — an 1858 landscape-design landmark that turned 843 acres of Manhattan bedrock into the most visited urban park in the country, still built exactly the way Olmsted and Vaux drew it.
VS
Empire State Building
The Empire State Building was constructed in just over a year, topping out in 1931 after a construction race with two other Manhattan skyscrapers then underway, and its speed of construction — reportedly averaging more than four floors a week during peak periods — remains a frequently cited feat of Depression-era engineering and labor organization. At 1,454 feet including its antenna, it held the title of world's tallest building for nearly 40 years, from its 1931 completion until the World Trade Center's North Tower surpassed it in 1970 — the longest reign of any building to hold that title in the 20th century. Its Art Deco design, with a distinctive stepped-back silhouette and a spire originally intended (unsuccessfully) as a mooring mast for airships, made it an instantly recognizable addition to the Manhattan skyline from the moment it opened. The building's 86th and 102nd floor observation decks have drawn visitors for generations, and its illuminated crown has marked countless holidays and civic occasions with color-coded lighting displays visible for miles across the city. It's also been a fixture of American film for decades, most famously as the setting for the climactic scene in the original 1933 King Kong. For a New York City attractions list, the Empire State Building is the essential "the skyline's original icon" entry — a 1931 Art Deco skyscraper that held the world's-tallest title for nearly four decades and is still one of the most photographed buildings on Earth.
