Chalmette, LA
Chalmette is the site of the Battle of New Orleans, fought on January 8, 1815, in which General Andrew Jackson's forces decisively defeated a larger British army in the final major battle of the War of 1812 — a victory that, due to the slow transatlantic communication of the era, actually took place after a peace treaty had already been signed, though word hadn't yet reached either army. Chalmette National Battlefield, part of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, preserves the battlefield grounds and a national cemetery on the site, giving the small St. Bernard Parish community direct stewardship of one of the most significant battle sites in American military history. The community was devastated by Hurricane Katrina's storm surge in 2005, with St. Bernard Parish suffering some of the most severe and near-total flooding of the entire New Orleans metro area, and Chalmette's subsequent rebuilding has made it a frequently cited case study in Gulf Coast disaster recovery. Chalmette's combination of hosting one of the most historically significant battlefields in American history and its severe Katrina flooding and subsequent rebuilding has made it one of the most historically and recently consequential suburbs anywhere in the greater New Orleans metropolitan area.
VS
Slidell, LA
Slidell sits at the eastern end of Lake Pontchartrain's north shore, close to the Mississippi state line, and its position along Interstate 10 and Interstate 12 has made it a significant transportation crossroads for traffic moving between New Orleans, the Gulf Coast, and points further east. The city's Olde Towne Slidell historic district has preserved a walkable cluster of early-20th-century commercial buildings along Erlanger Street, giving the city a small-town downtown core distinct from its newer highway-corridor commercial development. Slidell was significantly impacted by Hurricane Katrina's storm surge in 2005, with substantial flooding across parts of the city, and its recovery and subsequent growth in the years since have made it one of the more closely watched examples of north shore rebuilding and continued suburban expansion in the broader New Orleans metro area. Slidell's combination of its position as a major interstate transportation crossroads, a preserved small-town historic downtown in Olde Towne, and its post-Katrina recovery and growth has made it one of the larger and more strategically positioned suburbs anywhere on Lake Pontchartrain's north shore.
