Chanel
Chanel No. 5 launched in 1921, developed by designer Coco Chanel in collaboration with perfumer Ernest Beaux, and it became one of the most commercially successful and culturally significant fragrances ever created, reportedly the first perfume to use synthetic aldehydes as a central component of its scent profile. Chanel No. 5's marketing became closely tied to Coco Chanel's own personal brand and later to Marilyn Monroe, who famously stated in a 1952 interview that she wore nothing to bed but a few drops of Chanel No. 5, an offhand remark that became one of the most quoted lines in perfume marketing history. The fragrance's iconic minimalist rectangular bottle design, itself a deliberate departure from the more ornate perfume bottle designs common at the time of its launch, became as recognizable as the scent itself and has remained largely unchanged for more than a century. Chanel's combination of No. 5's pioneering use of synthetic aldehydes and its enduring Marilyn Monroe-linked cultural cachet has made it one of the most commercially and culturally significant fragrance brands in history.

Jo Malone
Jo Malone London was founded by British entrepreneur Jo Malone, who began her career as a facialist before developing her own fragrance blends, opening her first shop in London in 1994 and building the brand's identity around a minimalist, understated approach to scent distinctly different from more traditionally opulent luxury perfume houses. The brand became particularly known for its "fragrance combining" concept, explicitly encouraging customers to layer two different Jo Malone scents together to create a personalized combined fragrance, a marketing approach that positioned the brand's individual scents as deliberately modular components rather than complete standalone products. Estée Lauder Companies acquired Jo Malone London in 1999, and Jo Malone herself later departed the company due to a non-compete agreement before eventually launching a separate fragrance venture, Jo Loves, reflecting a notable founder-departure story within the broader beauty industry. Jo Malone's combination of its distinctive fragrance-layering marketing concept and its founder's own subsequent departure and relaunch story has made it one of the most distinctively positioned fragrance brands in modern luxury retail.
