Chappaqua, NY
Chappaqua, a hamlet within the town of New Castle in northern Westchester County, became one of the most widely recognized suburb names in the country after Bill and Hillary Clinton purchased a home there in 1999, shortly before Hillary Clinton's first US Senate campaign — a purchase that was itself widely covered specifically because sitting presidents have rarely bought a private home mid-administration, let alone one in a small Westchester hamlet. The area's rolling, wooded terrain and larger residential lot sizes give it a more rural, horse-country feel than the denser villages closer to the city line, a character that's been part of Chappaqua's appeal for well-off Manhattan commuters willing to trade a longer rail ride for more space and privacy. Metro-North's Harlem Line connects Chappaqua to Grand Central in a little over an hour, a meaningfully longer commute than closer-in Westchester towns like Bronxville or Scarsdale, reflecting Chappaqua's position further north along the line and its correspondingly lower density and larger property sizes. The New Castle school district, serving Chappaqua, consistently ranks among the top public school systems in New York State, and that reputation, combined with the area's larger lots and the enduring name recognition from its most famous residents, has kept Chappaqua one of the most sought-after addresses in northern Westchester County.
VS
Larchmont, NY
Larchmont sits on Long Island Sound in southern Westchester County, and its compact, walkable village center — built directly around the Metro-North station — has made it one of the more pedestrian-friendly communities along the New Haven Line, with a Main Street commercial district that's stayed within easy walking distance of most of the village's housing stock. Manor Park, a waterfront park along the Sound, gives residents direct public access to the water in a part of Westchester where much of the shoreline in neighboring towns is held privately by yacht clubs and homeowners' associations, a genuine point of distinction for a town of Larchmont's size. Metro-North's New Haven Line puts Larchmont within roughly 40 minutes of Grand Central Terminal, and the village shares a public school system, the Mamaroneck Union Free School District, with the neighboring town of Mamaroneck — a district that consistently posts strong performance on state assessments and college placement. Larchmont's combination of walkable village scale, genuine public waterfront access at Manor Park, and a solid regional school district has made it one of the more consistently recommended entry points into Westchester's Sound-shore communities for families who want a fast Manhattan commute without the price premium of Rye or the larger, more rural lots further inland.
