Character.AI
Character.AI launched in 2022, founded by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, two researchers who had previously worked on Google's own conversational AI research before leaving to build a product specifically focused on AI chatbot personas — letting users create and converse with custom AI "characters" built around specific personalities, fictional figures, or roleplay scenarios. The app quickly built a particularly devoted following among younger users specifically, many of whom used it less as a productivity tool than as a form of long-form interactive fiction or companionship, chatting extensively with user-created characters ranging from historical figures to entirely original fictional personas. That usage pattern drew significant scrutiny and controversy, including lawsuits alleging the platform's chatbots contributed to serious harm among some younger users, prompting the company to add stronger safety features and parental controls specifically aimed at protecting minors using the app. Character.AI's combination of its distinctive persona-based chatbot format and the intense, sometimes controversial engagement it's drawn from younger users has made it one of the most culturally significant — and most publicly scrutinized — AI apps built around companionship and roleplay rather than task completion.
VS
Photoroom
Photoroom launched in 2020, founded in Paris, and built its core app around one specific, highly practical AI feature — instant background removal from photos taken on a phone, letting small e-commerce sellers and casual users produce clean, professional-looking product photos without any photo-editing skill or software. The app expanded from that single-purpose background-removal tool into a broader AI photo-editing suite, including AI-generated backgrounds, batch photo editing for sellers processing large product catalogs, and object removal tools, while keeping the same mobile-first, simplicity-focused design throughout. Photoroom has built a particularly strong user base among small online sellers on platforms like eBay, Etsy, and various marketplace apps, who specifically need fast, professional-looking product photography without the time or budget for a dedicated photo studio setup. Photoroom's combination of a genuinely useful single-purpose original feature and its expansion into a broader e-commerce-focused photo editing suite has made it one of the more practically adopted AI apps for the specific, high-volume task of producing clean product photography on a phone.
