Charleston City Market
Charleston City Market has operated continuously since 1804, built on land donated to the city specifically for use as a public market, and its long, low sheds running through several downtown blocks have made it one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in the entire United States. The market has long been closely associated with the Gullah Geechee sweetgrass basket-weaving tradition, a craft brought to the Carolina Lowcountry by enslaved West Africans and passed down through generations of Gullah artisans, who still hand-weave and sell baskets at the market using techniques largely unchanged for centuries. Unlike many historic markets that have shifted entirely toward tourist-focused retail, the Charleston City Market has maintained genuine connections to its craft and food-vendor origins, with local artisans and food producers continuing to sell alongside more conventional souvenir retail throughout the market's historic sheds. For a Charleston attractions list, the City Market is the essential "the market that's stayed a market" entry — an 1804 public market still hosting hand-woven Gullah Geechee sweetgrass baskets made with the same techniques enslaved artisans brought to the Lowcountry centuries ago.
VS
Magnolia Plantation and Gardens
Magnolia Plantation was founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, who have maintained ownership of the property for well over three centuries, making it one of the oldest continuously family-owned properties in the entire United States, and its gardens, developed extensively starting in the 1840s, are among the oldest unrestored public gardens in the country. The plantation has increasingly built its visitor experience around a direct, unflinching reckoning with its history as a working rice plantation dependent on enslaved labor, offering a dedicated "From Slavery to Freedom" tour through preserved original slave cabins that presents the site's full history rather than focusing purely on its ornamental gardens. The gardens themselves were designed in the informal, naturalistic English landscape style rather than the rigid geometric layouts common to European formal gardens, deliberately built to look unplanned and wild — a style choice that let the property become one of America's first tourist attractions of any kind when it opened to visitors in 1870. For a Charleston attractions list, Magnolia Plantation is the essential "three centuries, told in full" entry — one of America's oldest continuously family-owned properties, now presenting both its historic gardens and its slave-labor history directly rather than choosing one story over the other.
