Child's Play
"Child's Play" (1988) follows a serial killer's soul transferred into a "Good Guy" doll named Chucky, combining slasher genre conventions with a genuinely novel central premise that distinguished it from the human-killer template most of its contemporaries were built around. Its practical animatronic and puppet effects work, required to bring Chucky convincingly to life across a wide range of physical actions, represented a significant technical achievement relative to most other slasher films of its era, which relied primarily on a human actor in a mask or makeup. The character's blend of childlike doll appearance and genuinely menacing, foul-mouthed personality gave the franchise a distinctive tonal register, mixing dark comedy with horror in a way that became increasingly pronounced across the series' many sequels. Its combination of its genuinely novel killer-doll premise and its technically impressive puppet effects work has made "Child's Play" one of the most distinctive and influential slasher franchises of the late 1980s.

Friday the 13th
"Friday the 13th" (1980) follows a group of camp counselors stalked and killed one by one at the reopening of the fictional Camp Crystal Lake, becoming one of the most commercially successful and influential entries in the slasher genre's early-1980s boom period. Tom Savini's practical makeup and gore effects, already established through his earlier work with George Romero, gave the film's kill sequences a level of visceral, technically impressive craftsmanship that helped set a new bar for on-screen violence within the emerging genre. The franchise's later introduction of the hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees, who only actually dons the mask starting with the third installment, went on to become one of horror cinema's most instantly recognizable icons across dozens of sequels and spinoffs. Its combination of launching one of horror's most enduring franchises and its influential practical effects work has made the original "Friday the 13th" one of the foundational texts of the American slasher genre.
