China Beach
China Beach, a small cove tucked below the bluffs of the Sea Cliff neighborhood, is one of the few beaches in San Francisco genuinely sheltered enough for regular swimming, its position within the bay's more protected waters giving it calmer conditions than the open-ocean beaches nearby. Its name references a 19th-century Chinese fishing community that once camped along the cove, and the beach retains a small, quiet character today, with limited facilities and a narrow strip of sand that keeps visitor numbers naturally lower than the city's larger, more accessible beaches. The beach's small changing rooms and showers, maintained by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, reflect its longtime, if modest, status as one of the city's only beaches genuinely set up for actual swimming rather than simply walking or sunbathing. For a San Francisco beaches list, China Beach is the essential "actually swimmable" entry — a small, sheltered Sea Cliff cove offering some of the calmest, most genuinely swim-friendly water anywhere along the city's otherwise cold and current-heavy coastline.
VS
Crissy Field
Crissy Field, a restored tidal marsh and waterfront park along the Presidio's northern edge, offers a flat, walkable beach with unobstructed views of the Golden Gate Bridge and passing sailboats, transformed from a decommissioned military airfield into public parkland through a major restoration completed in 2001. Its long, paved promenade running the length of the shoreline makes it one of the most popular spots in the city for walking, jogging, and cycling directly along the water, drawing a steady flow of both tourists and local residents throughout the day. The beach's consistent onshore winds, generated by the same Golden Gate strait dynamics that shape conditions at Baker Beach nearby, have made it a popular launch spot for kiteboarders and windsurfers specifically, a colorful, high-energy scene visible from the shoreline path. For a San Francisco beaches list, Crissy Field is the essential "walk, don't swim" entry — a restored former airfield turned waterfront promenade, offering Golden Gate Bridge views and a steady show of kiteboarders rather than a traditional swimming beach.
