Chiyonofuji
Chiyonofuji won 31 top-division championships and became one of the most beloved yokozuna in modern sumo history, nicknamed "the Wolf" for his lean, powerfully muscled physique that was unusual for a sport where wrestlers typically carry significantly more body mass. His combination of speed and technical throwing ability, rather than relying primarily on sheer size, made Chiyonofuji a stylistic outlier among sumo's champions and a significant influence on subsequent wrestlers who similarly prioritized conditioning and technique over pure bulk. Chiyonofuji's championship reign through the 1980s coincided with a significant boom in sumo's popularity within Japan, and his charismatic public persona helped make him one of the most recognizable Japanese athletes of his generation across any sport. His combination of 31 championships and his stylistically distinctive, conditioning-focused approach to the sport has made Chiyonofuji one of the most historically significant and widely admired yokozuna in sumo's modern era.
VS
Hakuho
Hakuho won 45 top-division championships during his career, more than double the total of the second-place wrestler in sumo history, establishing him as statistically the most dominant yokozuna, the sport's highest rank, ever to compete. Born in Mongolia before relocating to Japan to pursue sumo, Hakuho became one of several Mongolian-born wrestlers to dominate the traditionally Japanese sport during the 2000s and 2010s, a shift that generated significant debate within Japan about the sport's changing demographic makeup at its highest levels. His combined career win total and his 1,187 career victories in top-division competition both rank among the highest in sumo history, and Hakuho's technical versatility across sumo's many different winning techniques made him exceptionally difficult for opponents to prepare against. His record 45 championships and his sustained dominance across more than a decade at sumo's highest rank have made Hakuho the wrestler most universally cited as the greatest in the sport's centuries-long history, despite occasional controversy in Japan over his foreign birthplace.
