Chrysler Pacifica
The Chrysler Pacifica launched for the 2017 model year as a full replacement for the aging Town & Country, and its most significant engineering decision was making Chrysler — the company that had invented the minivan segment more than three decades earlier — the first manufacturer to offer a plug-in hybrid minivan, the Pacifica Hybrid, capable of driving purely on electric power for roughly 30 miles before its gasoline engine engages. That hybrid variant arrived years before most competitors offered any electrified minivan option at all, and it retained the segment's core practical strengths — Chrysler's second-generation Stow 'n Go seating, which folds both the second- and third-row seats flat into the floor without removing them, a feature the company had pioneered years earlier and continued refining specifically for the new platform. The Pacifica's interior technology push was similarly aggressive for the segment, offering a rear-seat entertainment system with individual streaming apps per screen, an in-vehicle vacuum cleaner built directly into the cargo area on certain trims, and — on the Pacifica Hybrid — a smartphone app allowing owners to remotely check battery charge status and pre-condition the cabin before a trip. Built at the same Windsor Assembly plant in Ontario that produced the original 1984 Caravan, the Pacifica represents Chrysler returning to the exact vehicle category it invented and pushing it toward electrification years ahead of most mainstream competitors — a reminder that the company most responsible for creating the minivan has also, at multiple points decades apart, been the one most willing to take a genuine engineering risk on where the segment goes next.
VS
Mazda MPV
The Mazda MPV launched in the US for the 1989 model year and took a genuinely different structural approach from the front-wheel-drive Chrysler minivans that had defined the category five years earlier — its first generation used rear-wheel drive, with optional four-wheel drive, giving it a driving character noticeably closer to a traditional car or SUV than the segment's front-drive norm, though at some cost to interior packaging efficiency versus its front-drive rivals. Its second generation, launched for 2000 on a front-wheel-drive platform shared with other Mazda and Ford models under their alliance at the time, leaned specifically into Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" brand identity, tuning the MPV's steering and handling to feel noticeably more engaging than most minivan competitors — a genuine attempt to make a family hauler that a driver might actually enjoy behind the wheel rather than simply tolerate. Rather than the sliding rear doors most competitors used by that point, several MPV generations retained conventional rear-hinged doors on some trims, a design choice that drew mixed reactions from buyers used to sliding-door convenience but that some owners preferred for a more solid, car-like feel when closing the doors. Produced at Mazda's manufacturing operations in Hiroshima, Japan, the MPV was discontinued in the US after the 2006 model year as Mazda shifted its lineup toward crossovers, but it remains a distinctive footnote in minivan history — proof that even inside a category built around maximum practicality, a manufacturer could still carve out a genuinely different personality focused specifically on how the vehicle felt to drive.
