Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, released in 1977 and directed by Steven Spielberg, presented humanity's first contact with extraterrestrial life as a wondrous, benevolent event rather than the hostile alien invasion typical of most science fiction films up to that point, a deliberately optimistic tonal choice that distinguished it sharply from the genre's earlier Cold War-era conventions. The film's climactic communication sequence, in which humans and aliens exchange a simple five-note musical phrase as a universal greeting, became one of the most recognizable pieces of film scoring in John Williams's celebrated career, and the phrase itself entered broader popular culture as an easily recognizable musical shorthand for alien contact. Wyoming's Devils Tower, the real geological formation depicted as the site of the film's climactic alien contact, became a significantly more visited tourist destination following the film's release, and the National Park Service has cited the film as a major contributing factor to increased visitor interest in the monument. Spielberg's decision to cast French filmmaker François Truffaut in a major supporting role, alongside the director's careful, wonder-focused approach to depicting the extraterrestrial encounter itself, helped establish Close Encounters as one of the defining optimistic science fiction films of its era, in direct contrast to the genre's more paranoid and hostile-alien-focused entries.
VS
Blade Runner
Blade Runner, released in 1982 and directed by Ridley Scott, was a box-office disappointment on its initial release but has since become one of the most influential science fiction films ever made, with its rain-soaked, neon-lit vision of a dystopian future Los Angeles establishing the visual template for the "cyberpunk" aesthetic that countless subsequent films and video games have drawn from. The film's ambiguous treatment of its central question — whether protagonist Rick Deckard is himself a "replicant," the film's term for artificially engineered humanoid beings he's tasked with hunting — has generated decades of ongoing critical debate, deliberately left unresolved across both the original theatrical cut and Scott's later director's cuts. Rutger Hauer's largely improvised "Tears in Rain" monologue, delivered by his character Roy Batty in the film's climax, is widely regarded as one of the most moving death soliloquies in science fiction film history, reportedly rewritten by Hauer himself from a longer scripted speech into its now-iconic condensed form. The film's slow-burn critical and cultural reappraisal over the decades since its release — moving from box-office disappointment to a film now frequently cited among the greatest science fiction movies ever made — has made Blade Runner one of the most significant examples in film history of a movie's reputation growing substantially long after its original theatrical run.
