Cloverfield
Cloverfield, released in 2008 and produced by J.J. Abrams, applied found footage's intimate, ground-level perspective to a massive-scale monster movie premise, following a group of young New Yorkers fleeing through the city during a sudden, unexplained monster attack, all captured on a single handheld camcorder. Its viral marketing campaign, initially withholding the film's title and most plot details from early trailers, generated significant online speculation and anticipation months before release, reflecting a marketing approach that built directly on the internet-driven buzz strategy The Blair Witch Project had pioneered nearly a decade earlier. The film's technical achievement in convincingly blending large-scale digital creature and destruction effects within the constrained, deliberately shaky found footage format demonstrated that the genre could successfully scale up to blockbuster-level visual spectacle rather than remaining confined to low-budget productions. Cloverfield's combination of genre-blending found footage monster movie spectacle and its innovative viral marketing campaign made it one of the most commercially and structurally significant found footage films to emerge from a major studio rather than an independent production.
VS
The Blair Witch Project
The Blair Witch Project, released in 1999, is widely credited as the film that established found footage horror as a viable mainstream commercial genre, presenting itself as recovered footage from three student filmmakers who disappeared while investigating a local Maryland legend. Its groundbreaking marketing campaign, which deliberately blurred the line between the film's fictional premise and reality through a viral website and promotional materials suggesting the footage might be genuine, became one of the most studied and influential film marketing strategies in movie history, particularly given its use of the still relatively new internet as a promotional tool. Made on an extraordinarily modest budget of roughly $60,000, the film's massive commercial success, grossing nearly $250 million worldwide, made it one of the most profitable films relative to its budget in cinema history. The Blair Witch Project's raw, deliberately amateurish handheld camera style and its reliance on suggested rather than depicted horror established the core found footage conventions that virtually every subsequent film in the genre has continued to draw from.
