Clue (Cluedo)
Clue was invented by British musician Anthony E. Pratt during World War II, originally called "Cluedo," a portmanteau of "clue" and "ludo," the Latin word for "I play," and the game was designed specifically to be played during wartime blackout evenings when British families often gathered indoors together. Pratt patented the game in 1944, and Waddingtons published it in the United Kingdom in 1949, with Parker Brothers releasing the American version, renamed simply Clue, the same year, establishing the game's dual naming convention that persists between British and American markets to this day. The game's deduction-based gameplay, requiring players to logically eliminate possible suspects, weapons, and rooms based on other players' card-reveal actions, became one of the most influential templates for mystery-solving board games and directly inspired the game's own 1985 feature film adaptation. Clue's combination of its unusual wartime blackout-era origin story and its foundational role establishing the deduction-based mystery board game genre has made it one of the most historically distinctive and enduringly popular board games ever created.
VS
Scrabble
Scrabble was invented by American architect Alfred Mosher Butts during the Great Depression, who combined elements of anagram games and crossword puzzles into a new word-tile game, initially called "Lexiko" and later "Criss-Cross Words," before businessman James Brunot refined the design and renamed it Scrabble in 1948. The game's tile point-value system, assigning different point values to letters based on Butts's own statistical analysis of letter frequency in English-language newspapers, reflected a genuinely rigorous quantitative approach to game design uncommon for board games of that era. Scrabble became a significant competitive phenomenon in its own right, with the World Scrabble Championship and the National Scrabble Championship in the United States drawing dedicated competitive players who memorize extensive official word lists as part of serious tournament preparation. Scrabble's combination of Butts's statistically rigorous letter-scoring system and its subsequent development into a serious competitive tournament game has made it one of the most enduringly significant word games in board gaming history.
