Coach
Coach was founded in 1941 in New York City, originally as a small family-run leather goods workshop, and the company built its early identity around durable, well-crafted leather handbags positioned at a more accessible price point than the traditional European luxury houses. The brand became particularly significant for helping pioneer the "accessible luxury" or "masstige" retail category, offering genuine leather craftsmanship and recognizable branding at price points meaningfully below houses like Louis Vuitton or Hermès, making status-associated handbags attainable to a much broader consumer base. Coach became part of Tapestry, Inc., a company that also owns Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman, reflecting a broader industry consolidation trend among accessible luxury brands, and Coach has continued positioning itself specifically within that more attainable luxury segment of the handbag market. Coach's combination of its pioneering role in the accessible luxury handbag category and its sustained positioning as an attainable alternative to elite European luxury houses has made it one of the most commercially significant handbag brands in the American fashion industry.

Burberry
Burberry was founded in 1856 in Basingstoke, England by Thomas Burberry, who invented gabardine, a tightly woven, water-resistant fabric, in 1879, a genuine textile innovation that became foundational to the brand's identity in outerwear before later expanding into handbags and broader luxury accessories. The company's distinctive tartan check pattern, introduced as a coat lining in the 1920s, became one of the most recognized and, at times, most heavily counterfeited patterns in the luxury fashion industry, leading Burberry to significantly scale back the pattern's visibility during the mid-2000s to distance the brand from its association with counterfeit goods. Burberry's handbag line grew significantly under a series of high-profile creative directors, and the brand's British heritage, combined with its historic supply of trench coats to British military officers during World War I, gave Burberry's accessories a distinctly British luxury heritage positioning compared to its primarily French and Italian competitors. Burberry's combination of its foundational gabardine fabric invention and its historic British military heritage has made it one of the most distinctively positioned luxury handbag and accessories brands in the industry.
