Colgate University
Colgate University was founded in 1819 by 13 men with 13 dollars and 13 prayers, according to the school's own founding lore, a detail that's given rise to the number 13 as a recurring, semi-official motif across campus traditions ever since. The university's small size, around 3,000 undergraduates, and its rural upstate New York setting in the village of Hamilton let it maintain close faculty-student relationships and a tight-knit residential campus culture that's frequently cited as a defining strength relative to larger research universities. Colgate's endowment per student ranks among the highest of any liberal arts college in the country, a resource base tied in part to the Colgate family's soap and toothpaste fortune, funding financial aid and campus facilities well beyond what a school of its size might otherwise support. The university's strong outcomes in finance and consulting recruiting, driven by an unusually well-connected and career-active alumni network for a liberal arts college, have made Colgate a consistent draw for students seeking a small-college experience without sacrificing access to competitive post-graduation career paths.
VS
New York University
New York University, founded in 1831, has grown from a relatively modest city university into one of the largest and most internationally recognized private research universities in the country, with a Washington Square campus that's fully integrated into Greenwich Village rather than set apart behind gates or a traditional quad. NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and Stern School of Business have each built reputations as among the best in their fields nationally, drawing on the university's Manhattan location to place students directly into the city's entertainment, finance, and media industries during their studies rather than only after graduation. The university's global network of degree-granting campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai, alongside more than a dozen study-away sites around the world, gives NYU one of the most extensive international footprints of any American university, letting students complete substantial portions of their degree at fully NYU-operated campuses overseas. NYU's rapid rise in national rankings and application volume over the past several decades — from a solid regional university to one of the most heavily applied-to schools in the country — is frequently cited as one of the more dramatic institutional transformations in modern American higher education.
