Colorado State Capitol
The Colorado State Capitol, completed in 1901 after nearly a decade of construction, sits at the literal heart of Denver's claim to being "the Mile High City" — the thirteenth step on its western entrance is officially marked at exactly 5,280 feet above sea level, a detail resurveyed and updated multiple times over the decades as measurement technology improved. The building's dome is capped with genuine 24-karat gold leaf, applied originally in 1908 partly to honor Colorado's mining history and partly as a deliberate architectural statement, and it's been re-gilded several times since to maintain its brilliant appearance against the Denver skyline. The capitol's interior makes extensive use of Colorado rose onyx, a distinctive pink-toned stone quarried from a single site in the state that was reportedly completely exhausted supplying the building's decorative trim, meaning the material used throughout the capitol's hallways can no longer be sourced from anywhere else. For a Denver attractions list, the Colorado State Capitol is the essential "the mile-high marker itself" entry — a gold-domed 1901 statehouse built with a now-unobtainable Colorado stone, marking the exact elevation the city's entire nickname is built around.
VS
Denver Art Museum
The Denver Art Museum's Frederic C. Hamilton Building, designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and opened in 2006, is built from titanium-clad geometric shapes that intentionally reference the jagged peaks of the nearby Rocky Mountains, making the building itself one of the most architecturally distinctive museum structures in the entire American West. The museum holds one of the largest and most significant collections of American Indian art anywhere in the world, spanning more than 250 years of work from tribal nations across North America — a collecting focus the museum established decades before most major American art institutions took Native American art seriously as fine art rather than ethnographic material. Its original 1971 Ponti Building, designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti and clad in a million reflective glass tiles, sits directly alongside Libeskind's titanium addition, giving the museum campus two dramatically different architectural statements from two different eras standing side by side. For a Denver attractions list, the Denver Art Museum is the essential "architecture as exhibit" entry — a titanium Libeskind addition beside a tile-clad Gio Ponti original, wrapped around one of the most significant American Indian art collections in the country.
