Colorado State Capitol
The Colorado State Capitol, completed in 1901 after nearly a decade of construction, sits at the literal heart of Denver's claim to being "the Mile High City" — the thirteenth step on its western entrance is officially marked at exactly 5,280 feet above sea level, a detail resurveyed and updated multiple times over the decades as measurement technology improved. The building's dome is capped with genuine 24-karat gold leaf, applied originally in 1908 partly to honor Colorado's mining history and partly as a deliberate architectural statement, and it's been re-gilded several times since to maintain its brilliant appearance against the Denver skyline. The capitol's interior makes extensive use of Colorado rose onyx, a distinctive pink-toned stone quarried from a single site in the state that was reportedly completely exhausted supplying the building's decorative trim, meaning the material used throughout the capitol's hallways can no longer be sourced from anywhere else. For a Denver attractions list, the Colorado State Capitol is the essential "the mile-high marker itself" entry — a gold-domed 1901 statehouse built with a now-unobtainable Colorado stone, marking the exact elevation the city's entire nickname is built around.
VS
Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre
Red Rocks Amphitheatre was carved directly into a natural rock formation of towering sandstone monoliths southwest of Denver, with the venue's current form completed in 1941 as a Depression-era Works Progress Administration project that shaped the surrounding stone into stadium seating rather than building a conventional structure from scratch. The venue's natural rock walls create acoustics widely regarded among musicians and sound engineers as some of the best of any outdoor amphitheater in the world, a reputation built up over decades of legendary performances, including a 1983 U2 concert filmed for the "Under a Blood Red Sky" video that's often credited with launching the band's American commercial breakthrough. Beyond concerts, the surrounding Red Rocks Park offers hiking trails winding directly among the same 300-foot sandstone formations that flank the stage, letting visitors experience the geology up close on days when no show is scheduled, a rare case of a major concert venue sitting inside genuinely significant public parkland rather than a fenced-off commercial lot. For a Denver attractions list, Red Rocks is the essential "the venue nature built" entry — a WPA-era amphitheater carved into 300-foot sandstone monoliths, still ranked among the best-sounding outdoor concert venues on Earth nearly a century after its construction began.
