Columbia University
Columbia University, chartered in 1754 as King's College under royal charter from King George II, is the oldest institution of higher education in New York State and one of nine colonial colleges founded before the American Revolution, giving it a historical claim to prestige that predates the United States itself. The university's Core Curriculum, a set of required courses in literature, philosophy, art, and music that every undergraduate must complete regardless of major, has remained largely intact since its introduction in 1919, making it one of the longest-running mandatory liberal arts curricula at any major American research university. Columbia's Manhattan location, on a campus carved out of the Upper West Side, gives students direct access to the city's publishing, finance, media, and arts industries in a way few other elite universities can match, and its journalism school administers the Pulitzer Prizes, cementing its institutional role at the center of American media. The university has produced more Nobel laureates affiliated with it than almost any other American institution, and its combination of Ivy League academic weight, a dense urban campus, and unmatched access to New York City's professional industries makes it consistently ranked among the most selective universities in the country.
VS
Cornell University
Cornell University was founded in 1865 on the principle, stated by founder Ezra Cornell, that it would be "an institution where any person can find instruction in any study" — a deliberately broad founding mission that's part of why Cornell today spans everything from agriculture and veterinary medicine to hotel administration and engineering. As both an Ivy League university and New York State's land-grant institution, Cornell occupies a unique dual identity — several of its colleges, including agriculture and human ecology, are statutory colleges partly funded by New York State, giving in-state students access to Ivy League instruction at public-university tuition rates in those specific programs. The university's Ithaca campus, set on a dramatic gorge-carved landscape in the Finger Lakes region, is frequently cited as one of the most scenic in the country, and its remote, self-contained location has fostered an unusually tight-knit residential campus culture compared to Ivy League peers embedded in major cities. Cornell's Hotel School, one of the first programs of its kind in the world, and its veterinary college, consistently ranked among the best nationally, reflect the breadth of professional programs the university offers alongside its traditional liberal arts and engineering strength — a combination that's made it one of the most comprehensive Ivy League institutions.
