Columbia University
Columbia University, chartered in 1754 as King's College under royal charter from King George II, is the oldest institution of higher education in New York State and one of nine colonial colleges founded before the American Revolution, giving it a historical claim to prestige that predates the United States itself. The university's Core Curriculum, a set of required courses in literature, philosophy, art, and music that every undergraduate must complete regardless of major, has remained largely intact since its introduction in 1919, making it one of the longest-running mandatory liberal arts curricula at any major American research university. Columbia's Manhattan location, on a campus carved out of the Upper West Side, gives students direct access to the city's publishing, finance, media, and arts industries in a way few other elite universities can match, and its journalism school administers the Pulitzer Prizes, cementing its institutional role at the center of American media. The university has produced more Nobel laureates affiliated with it than almost any other American institution, and its combination of Ivy League academic weight, a dense urban campus, and unmatched access to New York City's professional industries makes it consistently ranked among the most selective universities in the country.

Vassar College
Vassar College was founded in 1861 by brewer Matthew Vassar as one of the first degree-granting institutions of higher education for women in the United States, part of the group of elite women's colleges later known as the Seven Sisters, founded specifically to give women access to an academic rigor comparable to the all-male Ivy League. The college became fully coeducational in 1969, one of the first of the Seven Sisters to admit men, a shift that came after Vassar had turned down a proposed merger with Yale and instead chose to open its own doors to male students while retaining its historic campus and name. Vassar's academic reputation for rigor and its historically strong English, art history, and drama programs have produced a long list of prominent writers and artists, and the college's need-blind admission and full-need financial aid policies place it among the small number of liberal arts colleges that can financially support that level of accessibility. The campus itself, a designated National Historic Landmark District, includes a Frederick Law Olmsted-designed arboretum and a collection of architecturally significant academic buildings, giving Vassar one of the most distinctive physical campuses among the country's elite liberal arts colleges.
