Coral Gables, FL
Coral Gables was developed beginning in 1921 by George Merrick as one of the most fully realized examples of the "City Beautiful" planning movement in the United States, laid out with consistent Mediterranean Revival architecture, wide boulevards, and elaborately themed entrance gates and plazas built specifically to evoke the look of a Spanish or Italian coastal town rather than a typical South Florida suburb. The Biltmore Hotel, opened in 1926 as the centerpiece of Merrick's development, remains one of the most architecturally significant hotels in Florida, its distinctive tower modeled on the Giralda bell tower in Seville, and the hotel's pool has at various points held the title of the largest hotel pool in the continental United States. The University of Miami's main campus sits within Coral Gables, giving the city a genuine college-town presence layered on top of its planned-community architectural identity, and city zoning codes still enforce Merrick's original Mediterranean Revival design standards on new construction nearly a century after the city's founding. Coral Gables's combination of one of the most architecturally consistent planned communities in the country, a historically and architecturally significant flagship hotel, and a major research university campus has made it one of the most distinctive and consistently desirable suburbs anywhere in the greater Miami area.
VS
Key Biscayne, FL
Key Biscayne sits on a barrier island connected to the Miami mainland by the Rickenbacker Causeway, and that island geography has kept it a genuinely separate, lower-density community despite sitting just a few miles from downtown Miami's skyline, with development limited by the island's modest size and by Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park occupying substantial portions of its northern and southern ends. The Cape Florida Lighthouse, built in 1825 and rebuilt in 1846 after an attack during the Second Seminole War, is the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County, anchoring the state park at the island's southern tip and giving Key Biscayne a genuine historic landmark predating the founding of Miami itself by decades. The island has hosted a WTA and ATP professional tennis tournament, the Miami Open, at facilities on Crandon Park for decades, drawing top-ranked international players and giving the small island community a level of international sporting visibility unusual for a town of its size. Key Biscayne's combination of a genuinely separate island geography just minutes from downtown Miami, the county's oldest standing structure in its historic lighthouse, and a long-running top-tier professional tennis tournament has made it one of the more distinctive and consistently affluent suburbs anywhere in South Florida.
