Cuco
Cuco, the project of Mexican-American musician Omar Banos, built a devoted following through dreamy, bilingual bedroom pop recordings blending English and Spanish lyrics with lo-fi psychedelic and Latin musical influences, produced largely from his childhood bedroom studio. His early self-released material, distributed primarily through SoundCloud and Bandcamp, built a passionate grassroots fanbase specifically within Latino and Chicano youth communities before wider mainstream music industry attention followed. Cuco's continued success while remaining largely independent, turning down major label deals that would have required him to compromise creative control, reflected bedroom pop's broader ethos of DIY authenticity even as individual artists within the scene achieved increasingly mainstream commercial success. His combination of his bilingual, culturally specific bedroom pop sound and his sustained independent commercial success has made Cuco one of the most culturally significant Latino artists in the genre's history.
VS
Rex Orange County
Rex Orange County, the stage name of British musician Alexander O'Connor, built one of bedroom pop's most commercially successful catalogs, blending the genre's lo-fi, homemade production aesthetic with jazz-influenced chord progressions and unusually direct, diary-like lyrical honesty. His 2017 album "Apricot Princess," recorded largely independently before wider label backing, became a defining release of the bedroom pop scene's UK contingent, and his subsequent guest appearance on Tyler, the Creator's acclaimed album "Flower Boy" significantly raised his broader public profile. His continued commercial growth through subsequent albums, eventually reaching platinum sales certifications, demonstrated bedroom pop's genuine mainstream commercial viability well beyond its origins as a niche, internet-native genre built around modest home-recording budgets. His combination of "Apricot Princess's" foundational genre significance and his subsequent major mainstream commercial breakthrough has made Rex Orange County one of the most commercially significant artists in bedroom pop's history.
