Daddy Yankee
Daddy Yankee's 2004 song "Gasolina" became one of the first reggaeton songs to achieve major international crossover success, introducing the genre to a significantly broader global audience beyond its original Puerto Rican and broader Caribbean Latino base. His combination of technical rapping ability, developed from Puerto Rico's underground hip-hop scene, with reggaeton's dembow rhythm foundation helped establish much of the genre's core stylistic template during its earliest period of mainstream international recognition. Daddy Yankee's 2017 collaboration "Despacito," featuring Luis Fonsi, became one of the best-selling singles in music history and the most-viewed YouTube video for an extended period, reflecting reggaeton and Latin pop's continued massive global commercial growth well beyond the genre's earlier 2004-era breakthrough. His combination of foundational early reggaeton stardom and his sustained relevance through "Despacito" more than a decade later has made Daddy Yankee one of the most historically significant and commercially enduring figures in the genre's development into a genuinely global musical phenomenon.
VS
Karol G
Karol G, from Medellín, Colombia, became one of the most commercially successful women in reggaeton and Latin trap, a genre historically dominated by male artists, and her 2023 album Mañana Será Bonito became the first entirely Spanish-language album by a woman to top the Billboard 200. Her combination of genuine vocal and rapping versatility across reggaeton, Latin trap, and Latin pop production styles has established Karol G as one of the genre's most commercially and critically significant female artists, breaking through in a scene where women have historically received less mainstream visibility than male stars. Karol G's willingness to address themes of female empowerment and romantic independence within reggaeton's traditionally more male-perspective-dominated lyrical content gave her music a distinctive feminist perspective within the broader genre. Her combination of record-setting commercial achievements as a woman in reggaeton and her sustained genre-crossing artistic versatility has made Karol G one of the most significant contemporary figures in establishing space for women's mainstream success within reggaeton and Latin trap.
