Dartmouth College
Dartmouth College, founded in 1769, is the smallest of the eight Ivy League institutions by undergraduate enrollment, and its explicit institutional emphasis on undergraduate teaching over graduate research, unusual within the Ivy League, has made it a consistent draw for students specifically seeking Ivy League academics with a more liberal-arts-college feel. The college's Tuck School of Business, founded in 1900, is the oldest graduate business school in the world, and Dartmouth's "D-Plan," an unusual academic calendar allowing students significant flexibility in scheduling terms on and off campus throughout the year, reflects the college's rural New Hampshire setting and its winter sports-oriented campus culture. Dartmouth's remote Hanover, New Hampshire location, far from any major city, has fostered a particularly tight-knit, outdoorsy campus culture, and the college's ski team and its proximity to New England's mountain resorts have made winter sports a significant part of Dartmouth's institutional identity. The college's combination of genuine Ivy League academic prestige, its unusually undergraduate-focused teaching philosophy relative to Ivy League peers, and its remote, outdoor-recreation-oriented setting has made Dartmouth a distinctive choice among students specifically seeking that particular combination within the Ivy League.
VS
University of New Hampshire
The University of New Hampshire, founded in 1866, is the state's flagship public research university, and its marine science and ocean engineering programs benefit from the university's coastal New Hampshire location and its operation of dedicated research vessels for oceanographic study. UNH's business school and its engineering programs have built solid regional reputations, and the university's relatively small size for a state flagship, combined with its scenic Durham, New Hampshire campus, gives it a more intimate feel than many larger public research universities. The university's hockey program has built a strong regional following, reflecting New Hampshire's broader passion for the sport, and UNH's continued investment in marine and environmental sciences research has made it a significant contributor to Gulf of Maine ecosystem and climate research specifically. The university's combination of genuine marine science research strength and its role as New Hampshire's clear public flagship has made UNH central to the state's higher education system, particularly for students interested in oceanography or environmental sciences within a New England coastal setting.
