Dave Chappelle
Dave Chappelle built his reputation through both stand-up and his sketch series "Chappelle's Show," which he abruptly walked away from in 2005 at the height of its popularity, reportedly over concerns about the direction and reception of the show's racial comedy. His return to prominence through a series of Netflix stand-up specials beginning in 2017 made him one of the platform's most significant comedy signings, with several specials generating substantial mainstream news coverage and public debate over their content. Chappelle received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2019, one of the highest honors in American comedy, recognizing his overall body of work across both his sketch comedy and stand-up careers. Chappelle's combination of his historically significant decision to leave "Chappelle's Show" at its peak and his subsequent high-profile Netflix stand-up resurgence has made him one of the most consequential comedians of the 21st century.
VS
Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy joined "Saturday Night Live" at just 19 years old in 1980 and is widely credited with helping save the show during a critically panned early-1980s period, before launching a stand-up career alongside his film work that produced two landmark concert films. His 1983 concert film "Delirious" and 1987 follow-up "Raw" are both frequently cited among the greatest stand-up specials ever recorded, showcasing the same high-energy, character-driven performance style that also defined his film comedy work throughout the decade. Murphy's subsequent decades-long film career, spanning broad studio comedies and later more dramatic and family-oriented roles, made him one of the most commercially successful actors to emerge from a stand-up comedy background. Murphy's combination of his history-making early "Saturday Night Live" run and his landmark "Delirious" and "Raw" concert films has made him one of the most influential comedians in American entertainment history.
