Davidson College
Davidson College, founded in 1837 by Presbyterians, maintains an honor code so central to campus life that students can take exams unproctored and leave personal belongings unattended across campus, a level of institutional trust that the college treats as a defining feature of student life rather than a formality. The college's small size, around 2,000 undergraduates, and its consistently top-10 national liberal arts college ranking reflect an institutional strategy of maintaining Ivy League-caliber selectivity and academic rigor while remaining considerably smaller and less well known nationally than peer colleges like Williams or Amherst. Davidson's men's basketball program drew national attention during the 2008 NCAA tournament, when star player Stephen Curry led the small college on a surprise run to the Elite Eight, giving the college a level of mainstream sports visibility unusual for a school of its size and academic focus. The college's need-blind admission and no-loan financial aid policy, which replaces loans with grants in every student's aid package, places Davidson among a small group of elite liberal arts colleges wealthy enough to guarantee that level of financial accessibility to every admitted student regardless of need.
VS
Wake Forest University
Wake Forest University, founded in 1834, relocated its entire campus from the small town of Wake Forest to Winston-Salem in 1956, funded by a major gift from the Reynolds tobacco family — a move that let the university build a new, unified Georgian-style campus and grow into a nationally ranked research university. The university's motto, "Pro Humanitate," reflects an institutional emphasis on service and applied ethics that's woven into Wake Forest's curriculum, and the school's relatively small size for a national research university, around 5,500 undergraduates, lets it maintain smaller class sizes than most peer institutions of similar research standing. Wake Forest's School of Business and its law school have both built strong regional and national reputations, and the university's basketball program, which produced NBA stars like Tim Duncan and Chris Paul, has given the school a national athletic profile that punches above its academic-institution size. The university's combination of research-university resources and a genuinely small liberal-arts-scale undergraduate experience — sometimes described as offering "small college, big university" advantages simultaneously — has made Wake Forest a consistent draw for students who want research funding and name recognition without the scale of a massive public flagship.
