Dearborn, MI
Dearborn has been the headquarters of Ford Motor Company since Henry Ford established his operations there in the early 20th century, and the company's sprawling Ford World Headquarters and the nearby Ford Rouge assembly complex — once the largest integrated factory in the world — have made the city synonymous with the American auto industry's founding history. The Henry Ford Museum and adjacent Greenfield Village, which Ford himself established in the 1920s and '30s to preserve historic American buildings and technological artifacts, together form one of the largest indoor-outdoor history museum complexes in the country, drawing visitors well beyond just those interested in automotive history. Dearborn is also home to one of the largest and most established Arab-American communities in the entire United States, a population that's shaped the city's restaurant scene, cultural institutions, and civic life substantially since waves of Lebanese, Yemeni, and other Arab immigrants began settling there through the 20th century, drawn in part by manufacturing jobs at the nearby Ford plants. Dearborn's combination of being the literal headquarters of a founding American auto manufacturer, hosting one of the country's most significant history museum complexes, and having one of the largest and most established Arab-American communities in the country has made it one of the most historically and culturally significant suburbs anywhere in the Detroit metropolitan area.
VS
Bloomfield Hills, MI
Bloomfield Hills has consistently ranked among the wealthiest small cities in Michigan, built around large wooded lots and a rolling, lake-dotted landscape that's kept the city's overall development density far lower than most of the surrounding Detroit suburbs. The Cranbrook Educational Community, founded in the 1920s by newspaper publisher George Gough Booth, combines a prestigious private school, an art academy, and a science institute across a campus whose Arts and Crafts and Art Deco architecture, much of it designed by Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, has made it one of the most architecturally significant educational campuses in the entire country. The city's public and private schools have consistently ranked among the strongest in Michigan, a reputation reinforced directly by the presence of Cranbrook's own respected academy, and that combination has made Bloomfield Hills one of the most consistently competitive and expensive residential markets anywhere in Oakland County. Bloomfield Hills's combination of large, low-density wooded lots, one of the most architecturally significant educational campuses in the country in Cranbrook, and consistently top-ranked schools has made it one of the wealthiest and most academically distinguished suburbs anywhere in the greater Detroit metropolitan area.
