Deftones
Deftones distinguished themselves from more straightforwardly aggressive nu metal contemporaries by incorporating shoegaze, dream pop, and ambient influences alongside their heavy guitar foundation, giving their sound a more atmospheric, texturally varied quality that helped the band achieve sustained critical respect beyond typical nu metal genre boundaries. Their 2000 album White Pony marked a significant artistic maturation, incorporating more melodic and atmospheric elements that distinguished it from the band's earlier, more straightforwardly heavy material, and the album is widely regarded as one of the most artistically ambitious releases associated with the broader nu metal era. Frontman Chino Moreno's vocal range, moving fluidly between aggressive screaming and genuinely melodic singing within the same songs, gave Deftones a dynamic vocal versatility that distinguished the band from acts relying more heavily on a single vocal approach throughout their material. Their combination of genre-blending atmospheric ambition and their sustained critical respect well beyond nu metal's typical commercial lifespan has made Deftones one of the most artistically significant and enduringly influential bands associated with the broader movement.
VS
Korn
Korn's 1994 self-titled debut album is widely credited as one of the foundational texts that launched nu metal as a distinct genre, blending heavy, downtuned guitar riffs with hip-hop-influenced rhythms and frontman Jonathan Davis's raw, emotionally exposed lyrical content addressing childhood trauma and abuse. The band's use of seven-string guitars, tuned unusually low to create a heavier, more percussive sound, became a defining sonic signature that numerous subsequent nu metal bands directly adopted, significantly shaping the genre's overall guitar tone. Korn's 1998 album Follow the Leader debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, reflecting the band's massive commercial breakthrough during nu metal's late-1990s mainstream peak, and their sustained popularity helped establish Southern California as one of the genre's most significant regional scenes. Their combination of genuinely foundational sonic innovation and Davis's unusually raw emotional vulnerability within an aggressive musical framework has made Korn the band most consistently cited as nu metal's founding and most influential act.
