Deftones
Deftones distinguished themselves from more straightforwardly aggressive nu metal contemporaries by incorporating shoegaze, dream pop, and ambient influences alongside their heavy guitar foundation, giving their sound a more atmospheric, texturally varied quality that helped the band achieve sustained critical respect beyond typical nu metal genre boundaries. Their 2000 album White Pony marked a significant artistic maturation, incorporating more melodic and atmospheric elements that distinguished it from the band's earlier, more straightforwardly heavy material, and the album is widely regarded as one of the most artistically ambitious releases associated with the broader nu metal era. Frontman Chino Moreno's vocal range, moving fluidly between aggressive screaming and genuinely melodic singing within the same songs, gave Deftones a dynamic vocal versatility that distinguished the band from acts relying more heavily on a single vocal approach throughout their material. Their combination of genre-blending atmospheric ambition and their sustained critical respect well beyond nu metal's typical commercial lifespan has made Deftones one of the most artistically significant and enduringly influential bands associated with the broader movement.
VS
Limp Bizkit
Limp Bizkit's 1999 album Significant Other and 2000 follow-up Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water both debuted at or near the top of the Billboard 200, reflecting the band's massive commercial dominance during nu metal's absolute peak of mainstream popularity around the turn of the millennium. Frontman Fred Durst's brash, confrontational public persona and the band's combination of rap-influenced vocal delivery with heavy guitar riffs made Limp Bizkit one of the most commercially recognizable acts of the genre, even as they drew significant critical skepticism throughout their career. The band's headlining performance at the chaotic 1999 Woodstock '99 festival, during which their set was later cited amid broader discussions of crowd violence and property destruction at the event, became a significant and controversial part of the band's broader public history. Limp Bizkit's combination of massive early commercial dominance and their significant, if polarizing, role in nu metal's mainstream popularization has made them one of the genre's most commercially significant, if critically contested, acts.
