Delaware College of Art and Design
Delaware College of Art and Design, founded in 1997, offers a two-plus-two degree structure in which students complete their first two years in Wilmington before transferring to complete a bachelor's degree through a partnership arrangement, an unusual structural model among American art schools. The college's small size and its focused, foundational studio art curriculum give students intensive, close instruction in fundamental drawing, design, and illustration skills before their eventual transfer to complete more specialized coursework at a partner four-year institution. The school's downtown Wilmington location gives students access to the city's cultural institutions, and its small, tightly focused first-two-years curriculum has made it a distinctive entry point for Delaware students specifically interested in pursuing art and design careers. The college's unusual two-plus-two structural model and its narrow focus on foundational studio art training have made Delaware College of Art and Design one of the more institutionally unique art education options within the state.
VS
Goldey-Beacom College
Goldey-Beacom College, formed through a 1999 merger of two earlier Wilmington business schools with roots dating to the 19th century, is a small private college focused almost entirely on business education, offering degrees in accounting, finance, and business administration. The college's small size and its explicit career-focused business curriculum reflect its founding institutional roots as vocational business training schools, an identity the merged college has maintained even as it's expanded into a broader four-year degree-granting institution. Goldey-Beacom's significant international student population, drawn partly by the college's relatively affordable tuition and its direct business career preparation, gives the small college a notably globally diverse student body relative to its modest overall size. The college's combination of its narrow, business-focused curriculum and its significant international student enrollment has made Goldey-Beacom a distinctive small private college within Delaware's higher education landscape.
