Delaware College of Art and Design
Delaware College of Art and Design, founded in 1997, offers a two-plus-two degree structure in which students complete their first two years in Wilmington before transferring to complete a bachelor's degree through a partnership arrangement, an unusual structural model among American art schools. The college's small size and its focused, foundational studio art curriculum give students intensive, close instruction in fundamental drawing, design, and illustration skills before their eventual transfer to complete more specialized coursework at a partner four-year institution. The school's downtown Wilmington location gives students access to the city's cultural institutions, and its small, tightly focused first-two-years curriculum has made it a distinctive entry point for Delaware students specifically interested in pursuing art and design careers. The college's unusual two-plus-two structural model and its narrow focus on foundational studio art training have made Delaware College of Art and Design one of the more institutionally unique art education options within the state.
VS
University of Delaware
The University of Delaware, founded in 1743, is the state's flagship public research university, and its chemical engineering and materials science programs benefit directly from Delaware's historical significance as the longtime headquarters of DuPont, one of the world's largest chemical companies. The university's business school and its political science and international relations programs have built solid national reputations, and UD's continued close ties to Delaware's corporate law and chemical industry sectors give students in relevant programs unusually direct regional internship access. UD's Newark, Delaware campus and its status as the state's only major public research university give it an outsized role in producing Delaware's professional workforce, a responsibility magnified by Delaware's status as one of the smallest states by population. The university's combination of genuine chemical engineering research strength tied to Delaware's DuPont legacy and its role as the state's clear public flagship has made UD central to both Delaware's higher education system and its broader corporate economy.
