Delaware State University
Delaware State University, founded in 1891, is the state's historically Black land-grant university, and its aviation program, one of the only such programs at any HBCU in the country, reflects the university's specific institutional investment in producing Black commercial and military pilots. The university's agricultural and biological sciences programs reflect its land-grant founding mission, and Delaware State's 2021 merger with Wesley College substantially expanded its Dover, Delaware campus and academic program offerings, including new health sciences and nursing degrees. Delaware State's continued growth in aviation, aerospace, and STEM programming has positioned the university as a significant contributor to broader national efforts to diversify the commercial aviation and aerospace workforce specifically. The university's combination of its land-grant HBCU status, its distinctive aviation program, and its recent expansion through the Wesley College merger has made Delaware State one of the most institutionally significant and rapidly growing HBCUs in the country.
VS
University of Delaware
The University of Delaware, founded in 1743, is the state's flagship public research university, and its chemical engineering and materials science programs benefit directly from Delaware's historical significance as the longtime headquarters of DuPont, one of the world's largest chemical companies. The university's business school and its political science and international relations programs have built solid national reputations, and UD's continued close ties to Delaware's corporate law and chemical industry sectors give students in relevant programs unusually direct regional internship access. UD's Newark, Delaware campus and its status as the state's only major public research university give it an outsized role in producing Delaware's professional workforce, a responsibility magnified by Delaware's status as one of the smallest states by population. The university's combination of genuine chemical engineering research strength tied to Delaware's DuPont legacy and its role as the state's clear public flagship has made UD central to both Delaware's higher education system and its broader corporate economy.
